Plate and Shell Heat Exchanger
The Plate and Shell Heat Exchanger—also known as a thin-plate heat exchanger—uses plate tubes as its primary heat transfer element. This design combines the high efficiency of plate technology with the robustness of a shell structure, making it suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure, and compact industrial applications.
Structural Composition
Plate Tube Bundle
The core consists of a bundle of plate tubes. Pairs of cold-formed metal strips are precision-welded along the contact lines to create multiple flat, parallel flow channels. Plate tubes of varying widths are arranged in sequence, and their ends are embedded into metal strips and welded to form tube sheets. This assembly becomes the complete plate tube bundle.
 
Shell Structure
The tube bundle is installed inside a pressure-resistant shell. A sliding seal between the shell and tube bundle compensates for longitudinal thermal expansion. Shell cross-sections are commonly circular, but rectangular or hexagonal designs are also used depending on process requirements.

Working Principle
Two process fluids flow through the alternating channels formed by the plate bundle. Heat from the hot medium is transferred through the thin plate walls to the adjacent cold-medium channel. Heat exchange occurs primarily through conduction, supported by convection and radiation effects. This multi-channel structure ensures uniform flow distribution and high thermal efficiency.
